So I'm coming out strong with a bold new theory about the latest Zelda game: Breath of the Wild, and where it is in the Zelda timeline
(Can I take a second to talk about how weird that name sounds? My breath is wild sometimes, but that's not necessarily a good thing)
I was poking around on Zeldapedia and stumbled upon the box art for A Link to the Past. Of course I had seen it a hundred times before, but this time I realized something that I hadn't before. The kinks in the sword.
Now, what other box art have we seen with a master sword with signs of wear & tear. Why am I even asking? You all know.
So, sure. The box art is similar. That doesn't mean they're connected, right? Well, maybe not by itself, but this isn't the only evidence.
Earlier today, I was reading an article about a group of theorist that noticed another connection: The flora.
Tell me, what are the similarities between these two pictures?
The flowers are in the same place. And they're similar in color. Also, the Breath of the Wild Picture is very similar to another A Link to the Past picture:
So is Breath of the Wild after A Link to the Past? Or perhaps, a new timeline split where Hyrule has been taken over by the evil spirit of Ganon, the Calamity Ganon?
Whoa whoa lets slow down here. Do you know which game I though it was most similar to at first?
Twilight Princess.
Let me explain.
(Warning: Spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess ahead. You have been warned.)
The other day, I watched a video on the origins of the technology seen in Breath of the Wild. You can check it out here:
To recap: The person in this video (He is known as Zeltik) speculates that the ocktorok-like guardians are actually sheikah guardians gone rouge. He thinks that the blue technology is the normal tech, but that the pink is the influence of the Calamity Ganon.
So after watching it I thought, "You know what other people had tech that was blue when it was good and pink when it was bad?
The twili.
From Twilight Princess."
So is it after Twilight Princess or A Link to the Past?
Well...
I think it could include both.
In Twilight Princess, The Seven Sages attempt to kill Ganondorf, but ultimately end up sending him to the twilight realm. This is the basis for the game. But in the timeline where Link dies, Ganon is still imprisoned, but this time in the spirit realm. There is no mention of the Mirror of Twilight (Obviously, because Twilight Princess wasn't even close to being released yet), But that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist in the timeline. Ganon still could have discovered the power of the Twlight Realm in his time of conquest before the first Legend of Zelda (Which does come after A Link to the Past in the timeline), but never fully realized it's power. He was most likely stopped before he was killed by Link in the first Zelda. But it seems like Breath of the Wild could come after Zelda II in the event of Link being killed. Heck, the game over screen literally says RETURN OF GANON. If Link died, Ganon could return and harness the power of the Twilight Realm and finally succeed in fulfilling his dream of ruling and subsequently destroying Hyrule.
But this still leaves a lot unexplained.
Most likely you are all asking "How did the Sheikah gain access to the Twilight Tech?" Well, there is another theory that the Twili are none other than the Sheikah tribe, exiled to the twilight realm. This means that the twilight technology IS the sheikah technology.
And that's the reason that I stopped thinking that it had a connection to Twilight Princess.
Because if the Twili are the sheikah, they probably took their technology with them, but in the "Fall of the Hero" timeline, they maybe never were exiled and the twilight realm doesn't even exist. Leaving them plenty of time to hide underground and work on their tech.
So to recap:
Nintendo has purposefully made art for Breath of the Wild similar to A Link to the Past art, seeming to point to it's timeline placement. The sheikah tech seen in Breath of the Wild is the twilight technology, but since the twilight realm had no need to exist, they where never confined by it and they continued to work on it in the normal realm, and finally using it after the hero falls in Zelda II, but ultimately having Ganon use their guradians against them. The Sheikah were forced into hiding, choosing underground shrines as their homes, waiting for the clone of the first hero to come and be tested so he could return hyrule to it's former glory.

Oh, did I say clone of the hero? Well, that's A theory for another day.
